We have counselled all people, in the most clear and
eloquent language, to adorn their characters with trustworthiness and
godliness, and with such qualities as are conducive to the elevation of man's
station in the world of being. This Wronged One testifieth that the purpose for
which mortal men have, from utter nothingness, stepped into the realm of being,
is that they may work for the betterment of the world and live together in
concord and harmony. Dissension and strife have always been, and shall remain,
rejected by God. The Books, the Scriptures and Holy Writings of previous ages
have all proclaimed the joyful tidings that the purpose underlying this most
mighty Revelation is none other than the rehabilitation of the world and its
nations; that perchance the power of utterance may prevail over the power of
arms, and the world's affairs be administered through the potency of love. We
ask God, the True One, to invest all with the mantle of trustworthiness, for

It should… be noted that in one sense the stations of the
Prophets of God differ one from another. For instance, consider Moses. He
brought forth a Book and established ordinances, whilst a number of the
Prophets and Messengers who arose after Him were charged with the promulgation
of His laws, insofar as they remained consonant with the needs of the age. The
books and chronicles annexed to the Torah bear eloquent testimony to this truth.

Glorified be God! The Pen is perplexed what to write and the
Tongue wondereth what to utter. Despite unprecedented hardships and after

obstructing the vision and causing the light of understanding to be obscured.
Moreover We observe that the fresh calumnies which are now rife are far more

Beware lest ye speak of duality in regard to My Self, for
all the atoms of the earth proclaim that there is none other God but Him, the
One, the Single, the Mighty, the Loving.

realm of eternity, that I am God, none other God is there save Me, the Help in
Peril, the Self-Subsisting; and unto the end that hath no end I shall proclaim,
amidst the kingdom of names, that I am God, none other God is there beside Me,
the All-Glorious, the Best-Beloved.
Say: Lordship is My Name, whereof
I have created manifestations in the world of being, while We Ourself remain
sanctified above them, would ye but ponder this truth. And Godhead is My Name, whereof We have
created exponents whose power shall encompass the people of the earth and make
them true worshippers of God, could ye but recognize it. Thus should ye regard all Our Names, if ye be

O SON OF SPIRIT! The bird seeketh its nest; the nightingale
the charm of the rose; whilst those birds, the hearts of men, content with
transient dust, have strayed far from their eternal nest, and with eyes turned
towards the slough of heedlessness are bereft of the glory of the divine
presence. Alas! How strange and pitiful; for a mere cupful, they have turned
away from the billowing seas of the Most High, and remained far from the most

Previously We wrote to thee[Zaynu'l-Muqarrabin] that had the
friends there observed the payment of Huququ'lláh, the people of that region
would have enjoyed ease and comfort. Before this law was revealed there was no
obligation on the part of any soul. The Pen of Glory held back from revealing
laws and ordinances for a number of years, and this was a token of His heavenly
grace. Were the people of the world to recognize what inestimable benefits the
ordinances of the All-Merciful would bring forth, they would arise to fulfil

O Lord! Assist those who have renounced
all else but Thee, and grant them a mighty victory. Send down upon them, O

and exaltation, to enrich them and to make them triumphant with a wondrous

When Moses came unto Pharaoh and delivered unto him, as
bidden by God, the divine Message, Pharaoh spoke insultingly saying: “Art thou
not he that committed murder, and became an infidel?” Thus recounted the Lord
of majesty as having been said by Pharaoh unto Moses: “What a deed is that
which Thou hast done! Thou art one of the ungrateful. He said: ‘I did it
indeed, and I was one of those who erred. And I fled from you when I feared
you, but My Lord hath given Me wisdom, and hath made Me one of His Apostles.’” [Qur’án
26:19]
And now ponder in thy heart the commotion which God stirreth
up. Reflect upon the strange and manifold trials with which He doth test His
servants. Consider how He hath suddenly chosen from among His servants, and entrusted
with the exalted mission of divine guidance Him Who was known as guilty of
homicide, Who, Himself, had acknowledged His cruelty, and Who for well-nigh
thirty years had, in the eyes of the world, been reared in the home of Pharaoh
and been nourished at his table. Was not God, the omnipotent King, able to
withhold the hand of Moses from murder, so that manslaughter should not be

Say: Naught is seen
in My temple but the Temple of God, and in My beauty but His Beauty, and in My
being but His Being, and in My self but His Self, and in My movement but His
Movement, and in My acquiescence but His Acquiescence, and in My pen but His

hath not been in My soul but the Truth, and in Myself naught could be seen but

O ye peoples of the earth! By the righteousness of God, the
True One, the testimony shown forth by His Remembrance is like unto a sun which
the hand of the merciful Lord hath raised high in the midmost heart of the
heaven, wherefrom it shineth in the plenitude of its meridian splendour...
With each and every Prophet Whom We have sent down in the
past, We have established a separate Covenant concerning the Remembrance of God
and His Day. Manifest, in the realm of glory and through the power of truth,
are the Remembrance of God and His Day before the eyes of the angels that

It hath been laid down in the Bayán that marriage is
dependent upon the consent of both parties. Desiring to establish love, unity
and harmony amidst Our servants, We have conditioned it, once the couple’s wish
is known, upon the permission of their parents, lest enmity and rancour should
arise amongst them. And in this We have yet other purposes. Thus hath Our

Blessed are they that have soared on the wings of detachment
and attained the station which, as ordained by God, overshadoweth the entire
creation, whom neither the vain imaginations of the learned, nor the multitude
of the hosts of the earth have succeeded in deflecting from His Cause. Who is
there among you, O people, who will renounce the world, and draw nigh unto God,
the Lord of all names? Where is he to be found who, through the power of My
name that transcendeth all created things, will cast away the things that men
possess, and cling, with all his might, to the things which God, the Knower of
the unseen and of the seen, hath bidden him observe? Thus hath His bounty been
sent down unto men, His testimony fulfilled, and His proof shone forth above
the Horizon of mercy. Rich is the prize that shall be won by him who hath
believed and exclaimed: “Lauded art Thou, O Beloved of all worlds! Magnified be

The Best-Beloved is come. In His right hand is the sealed
Wine of His name. Happy is the man that turneth unto Him, and drinketh his
fill, and exclaimeth: “Praise be to Thee, O Revealer of the signs of God!” By
the righteousness of the Almighty! Every hidden thing hath been manifested
through the power of truth. All the favors of God have been sent down, as a
token of His grace. The waters of everlasting life have, in their fullness,
been proffered unto men. Every single cup hath been borne round by the hand of

And when this stage of the journey [“the City of Love”] is completed and the wayfarer hath soared beyond this lofty station, he entereth
the City of Divine Unity, and the garden of oneness, and the court of
detachment. In this plane the seeker casteth away all signs, allusions, veils,
and words, and beholdeth all things with an eye illumined by the effulgent
lights which God Himself hath shed upon him. In his journey he seeth all
differences return to a single word and all allusions culminate in a single
point. Unto this beareth witness he who sailed upon the ark of fire and
followed the inmost path to the pinnacle of glory in the realm of immortality:
“Knowledge is one point, which the foolish have multiplied.” [From a Hadíth]
This is the station that hath been alluded to in the tradition: “I am He,
Himself, and He is I, Myself, except that I am that I am, and He is that He

We ask God graciously to grant that all may evince such
fairness of character, such goodliness of deed and kindliness of word as will
meet with His good pleasure. It hath been decreed that the citadels of men's
hearts should be subdued through the hosts of a noble character and
praiseworthy deeds. Contention, discord, strife and sedition have all been
forbidden in the Book of God. Beseech the Lord that He deprive not His
dominions of the effulgent light of the sun of trustworthiness, nor deny them
the radiance of the Day-Star of truthfulness or the splendour of the orb of
justice and equity. Trustworthiness and piety are even as two luminaries
shining resplendent above the horizon of the heaven of the Tablet in which are
inscribed the ordinances of God. Well is it with them that have discerned them,

By the righteousness of God! Justice is a powerful force. It
is, above all else, the conqueror of the citadels of the hearts and souls of
men, and the revealer of the secrets of the world of being, and the

…consider Moses, son of ‘Imrán, one of the exalted Prophets
and Author of a divinely-revealed Book. Whilst passing, one day, through the
market, in His early days, ere His ministry was
proclaimed, He saw two men engaged in fighting. One of them asked the help of
Moses against his opponent. Whereupon, Moses intervened and slew him. To this
testifieth the record of the sacred Book. Should the details be cited, they
will lengthen and interrupt the course of the argument. The report of this
incident spread throughout the city, and Moses was full of fear, as is
witnessed by the text of the Book. And when the warning: “O Moses! of a truth,
the chiefs take counsel to slay Thee” [Qur’án 28:20] reached His ears, He went
forth from the city, and sojourned in Midian in the service of Shoeb. While
returning, Moses entered the holy vale, situate in the wilderness of Sinai, and
there beheld the vision of the King of glory from the “Tree that belongeth
neither to the East nor to the West.” [Qur’án 24:35] There He heard the
soul-stirring Voice of the Spirit speaking from out of the kindled Fire,
bidding Him to shed upon Pharaonic souls the light of divine guidance; so that,
liberating them from the shadows of the valley of self and desire, He might
enable them to attain the meads of heavenly delight, and delivering them,
through the Salsabíl of renunciation, from the bewilderment of remoteness,
cause them to enter the peaceful city of the divine presence. (Baha’u’llah, The

December 7
Concerning this Wronged One, most of the things reported in
the newspapers are devoid of truth. Fair speech and truthfulness, by reason of
their lofty rank and position, are regarded as a sun shining above the horizon
of knowledge. The waves rising from this Ocean are apparent before the eyes of
the peoples of the world and the effusions of the Pen of wisdom and utterance
are manifest everywhere.
It is reported in the press that this Servant hath fled from
the land of Tá (Tihrán) and gone to ‘Iráq. Gracious God! Not even for a single
moment hath this Wronged One ever concealed Himself. Rather hath He at all
times remained steadfast and conspicuous before the eyes of all men. Never have
We retreated, nor shall We ever seek flight. In truth it is the foolish people
who flee from Our presence. We left Our home country accompanied by two mounted
escorts, representing the two honoured governments of Persia and Russia until
We arrived in ‘Iráq in the plenitude of glory and power. Praise be to God! The
Cause whereof this Wronged One is the Bearer standeth as high as heaven and
shineth resplendent as the sun. Concealment hath no access unto this station,
nor is there any occasion for fear or silence. (Baha’u’llah, ‘Tablets of

December 6
O people of the world! Follow not the promptings of the
self, for it summoneth insistently to wickedness and lust; follow, rather, Him
Who is the Possessor of all created things, Who biddeth you to show forth
piety, and manifest the fear of God. He, verily, is independent of all His creatures. Take heed not to stir up mischief in
the land after it hath been set in order. Whoso acteth in this way is not of
Us, and We are quit of him. Such is the command which hath, through the power
of truth, been made manifest from the heaven of Revelation. (Baha’u’llah, ‘The

In these days truthfulness and sincerity are sorely
afflicted in the clutches of falsehood, and justice is tormented by the scourge
of injustice. The smoke of corruption hath enveloped the whole world in such
wise that naught can be seen in any direction save regiments of soldiers and
nothing is heard from any land but the clashing of swords. We beseech God, the
True One, to strengthen the wielders of His power in that which will

We have fixed a time for you, O people! If ye fail, at the
appointed hour, to turn towards God, He, verily, will lay violent hold on you,

In the treasuries of the knowledge of God there lieth
concealed a knowledge which, when applied, will largely, though not wholly,
eliminate fear. This knowledge, however, should be taught from childhood, as it
will greatly aid in its elimination. Whatever decreaseth fear increaseth
courage. Should the Will of God assist Us, there would flow out from the Pen of
the Divine Expounder a lengthy exposition of that which hath been mentioned,
and there would be revealed, in the field of arts and sciences, what would
renew the world and the nations. A word hath, likewise, been written down and
recorded by the Pen of the Most High in the Crimson Book which is capable of
fully disclosing that force which is hid in men, nay of redoubling its potency.
We implore God—exalted and glorified be He—to graciously assist His servants to
do that which is pleasing and acceptable unto Him. (Baha’u’llah, ‘Epistle to

… God is, in His Essence, holy above ascent and descent,
entrance and exit; He hath through all eternity been free of the attributes of
human creatures, and ever will remain so. No man hath ever known Him; no soul
hath ever found the pathway to His Being. Every mystic knower hath wandered far
astray in the valley of the knowledge of Him; every saint hath lost his way in
seeking to comprehend His Essence. Sanctified is He above the understanding of
the wise; exalted is He above the knowledge of the knowing! The way is barred

Abandon that which ye possess, and seize that which God, Who
layeth low the necks of men, hath brought. Know ye of a certainty that if ye

Say: We have made
each one of Our Names a wellspring from which We have caused the streams of
divine wisdom and understanding to gush forth and flow in the garden of Our

Omnipotent, the Omniscient, the All-Wise. Say: We have generated all
Letters from the Point and have caused them to return unto It, and We have sent
It down again in the form of a human temple. All glory be unto the Author of this incomparable and wondrous
handiwork! Erelong shall We unfold and
expound It again, in Our name, the All-Glorious. This is indeed a token of Our grace, and I,

There is no doubt that the Almighty hath sent down these
verses unto Him [the Báb], even as He sent down unto the Apostle of God. Indeed
no less than a hundred thousand verses similar to these have already been
disseminated among the people, not to mention His Epistles, His Prayers or His
learned and philosophical treatises. He revealeth no less than a thousand
verses within the space of five hours. He reciteth verses at a speed consonant
with the capacity of His amanuensis to set them down. Thus, it may well be
considered that if from the inception of this Revelation until now He had been
left unhindered, how vast then would have been the volume of writings

I magnify Thy Name, O my God, and offer thanksgiving unto
Thee, O my Desire, inasmuch as Thou hast enabled me to clearly perceive Thy
straight Path, hast unveiled Thy Great Announcement before mine eyes and hast
aided me to set my face towards the Dayspring of Thy Revelation and the
Fountainhead of Thy Cause, whilst Thy servants and Thy people turned away from
Thee. I entreat Thee, O Lord of the Kingdom of eternity, by the shrill voice of
the Pen of Glory, and by the Burning Fire which calleth aloud from the verdant
Tree, and by the Ark which Thou hast specially chosen for the people of Bahá, to grant that I may remain steadfast in my love for Thee,
be well pleased with whatsoever Thou hast prescribed for me in Thy Book and may

It beseemeth all men in this Day to take firm hold on the
Most Great Name, and to establish the unity of all mankind. There is no place

in the kingdom of creation, is called by the name of God, the Effulgent, the
All-Glorious. Beware that nothing deter thee from setting thy face towards thy
Lord, the Compassionate, the Most Merciful. We, verily, have heard the thing
for which thou didst supplicate thy Lord, whilst secretly communing with Him.
Wherefore, the breeze of My loving-kindness wafted forth, and the sea of My
mercy surged, and We answered thee in truth. Thy Lord, verily, is the
All-Knowing, the All-Wise. Whilst I lay, chained and fettered, in the prison of
Tihrán, one of thy ministers extended Me his aid. Wherefore hath God ordained
for thee a station which the knowledge of none can comprehend except His

Bestir yourselves, O people in anticipation of the days of

earth. Beware, O men, lest ye be tempted to part with Him in exchange for the
gold and silver ye possess. Let His love be a storehouse of treasure for your
souls, on the Day when naught else but Him shall profit you, the Day when every
pillar shall tremble, when the very skins of men shall creep, when all eyes
shall stare up with terror. Say: O people! Fear ye God, and turn not away
disdainfully from His Revelation. Fall prostrate on your faces before God, and

Whensoever the light of Manifestation of the King of Oneness
settleth upon the throne of the heart and soul, His shining becometh visible in
every limb and member. At that time the mystery of the famed tradition gleameth
out of the darkness: “A servant is drawn unto Me in prayer until I answer him;
and when I have answered him, I become the ear wherewith he heareth....” For
thus the Master of the house hath appeared within His home, and all the pillars
of the dwelling are ashine with His light. And the action and effect of the
light are from the Light-Giver; so it is that all move through Him and arise by
His will. And this is that spring whereof the near ones drink, as it is said:
“A fount whereof the near unto God shall drink....” [Qur’án 83:28]

O My Brother! A pure heart is as a mirror; cleanse it with
the burnish of love and severance from all save God, that the true sun may
shine within it and the eternal morning dawn. Then wilt thou clearly see the
meaning of “Neither doth My earth nor My heaven contain Me, but the heart of My

Twelve hundred and seventy years have elapsed since the
declaration of Muhammad, and each year unnumbered people
have circumambulated the House of God [Mecca]. In the concluding year of this
period He Who is Himself the Founder of the House went on pilgrimage. Great
God! There was a vast concourse of pilgrims from every sect. Yet not one
recognized Him, though He recognized every one of them—souls tightly held in
the grasp of His former commandment. The only person who recognized Him and
performed pilgrimage with Him is the one round whom revolve eight Vahíds, [1]
in whom God hath gloried before the Concourse on high by virtue of his absolute
detachment and for his being wholly devoted to the Will of God. This doth not
mean that he was made the object of a special favour, nay, this is a favour
which God hath vouchsafed unto all men, yet they have suffered themselves to be

Were men to meditate upon the lives of the Prophets of old,
so easily would they come to know and understand the ways of these Prophets
that they would cease to be veiled by such deeds and words as are contrary to
their own worldly desires, and thus consume every intervening veil with the
fire burning in the Bush of divine knowledge, and abide secure upon the throne

Lauded and glorified art Thou, O Lord my God! Thou art He
Who from everlasting hath been clothed with majesty, with authority and power,
and will continue unto everlasting to be arrayed with honor, with strength and
glory. The learned, one and all, stand aghast before the signs and tokens of
Thy handiwork, while the wise find themselves, without exception, impotent to
unravel the mystery of Them Who are the Manifestations of Thy might and power.
Every man of insight hath confessed his powerlessness to scale the heights of
Thy knowledge, and every man of learning hath acknowledged his failure to

O Thou cherished Fruit of the heart! Give ear to the
melodies of this mystic Bird warbling in the loftiest heights of heaven. The
Lord hath, in truth, inspired Me to proclaim: Verily, verily, I am God, He
besides Whom there is none other God. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.
O My servants! Seek ye earnestly this highest reward, as I
have indeed created for the Remembrance of God gardens which remain inscrutable
to anyone save Myself, and naught therein hath been made lawful unto anyone
except those whose lives have been sacrificed in His Path. Hence beseech ye
God, the Most Exalted, that He may grant you this meritorious reward, and He is
in truth the Most High, the Most Great. Had it been Our wish, We would have
brought all men into one fold round Our Remembrance, yet they will not cease to
differ, [cf. Qur’án 11:120] unless God accomplish what He willeth through the
power of truth. In the estimation of the Remembrance this commandment hath, in
very truth, been irrevocably ordained...

the agency of but one letter of Our Revelation, the world and all that is

the power of Truth. Ere long We shall prolong the days of such as have rejected

O peoples of the earth! God, the Eternal Truth, is My
witness that streams of fresh and soft-flowing waters have gushed from the

the wings of detachment, soar beyond all created things. Thus biddeth you the
Lord of creation, the movement of Whose Pen hath revolutionized the soul of

How often hath it been observed that certain human minds, far
from being a source of guidance, have become as fetters upon the feet of the
wayfarers and prevented them from treading the straight Path! The lesser
intellect being thus circumscribed, one must search after Him Who is the
ultimate Source of knowledge and strive to recognize Him. And should one come
to acknowledge that Source round Whom every mind doth revolve, then whatsoever
He should ordain is the expression of the dictates of a consummate wisdom. His
very Being, even as the sun, is distinct from all else beside Him. The whole
duty of man is to recognize Him; once this hath been achieved, then whatsoever
He may please to ordain is binding and in full accordance with the requirements
of divine wisdom. Thus have ordinances and prohibitions of every kind been laid

Say: This is the Paradise on whose foliage the wine of
utterance hath imprinted the testimony: “He that was hidden from the eyes of
men is revealed, girded with sovereignty and power!” This is the Paradise, the
rustling of whose leaves proclaims: “O ye that inhabit the heavens and the
earth! There hath appeared what hath never previously appeared. He Who, from
everlasting, had concealed His Face from the sight of creation is now come.”
From the whispering breeze that wafteth amidst its branches there cometh the
cry: “He Who is the sovereign Lord of all is made manifest. The Kingdom is
God’s,” while from its streaming waters can be heard the murmur: “All eyes are
gladdened, for He Whom none hath beheld, Whose secret no one hath discovered,

Know ye from what heights your Lord, the All-Glorious, is
calling? Think ye that ye have recognized the Pen wherewith your Lord, the Lord
of all names, commandeth you? Nay, by My life! Did ye but know it, ye would
renounce the world, and would hasten with your whole hearts to the presence of
the Well-Beloved. Your spirits would be so transported by His Word as to throw
into commotion the Greater World—how much more this small and petty one! Thus
have the showers of My bounty been poured down from the heaven of My
loving-kindness, as a token of My grace, that ye may be of the thankful. (Baha’u’llah,

Should differences arise amongst you over any matter, refer
it to God while the Sun still shineth above the horizon of this Heaven and,
when it hath set, refer ye to whatsoever hath been sent down by Him. This,
verily, is sufficient unto the peoples of the world. Say: Let not your hearts
be perturbed, O people, when the glory of My Presence is withdrawn, and the
ocean of My utterance is stilled. In My presence amongst you there is a wisdom,
and in My absence there is yet another, inscrutable to all but God, the
Incomparable, the All-Knowing. Verily, We behold you from Our realm of glory,
and shall aid whosoever will arise for the triumph of Our Cause with the hosts

We have heard the voice of thy pleading, O Pen, and excuse
thy silence. What is it that hath so sorely bewildered thee?
The inebriation of Thy presence, O Well-Beloved of all
worlds, hath seized and possessed me.
Arise, and proclaim unto the entire creation the tidings
that He Who is the All-Merciful hath directed His steps towards the Ridván and
entered it. Guide, then, the people unto the garden of delight which God hath
made the Throne of His Paradise. We have chosen thee to be our most mighty

It hath been decreed by Us that the Word of God, and all the
potentialities thereof, shall be manifested unto men in strict conformity with
such conditions as have been foreordained by Him Who is the All-Knowing, the
All-Wise.... Should the Word be allowed to release suddenly all the energies
latent within it, no man could sustain the weight of so mighty a Revelation.

I am come to thee[1], O land of the heart’s desire, with
tidings from God, and announce to thee His gracious
favor and mercy, and greet and magnify thee in His name. He, in truth, is of
immense bounteousness and goodness. Blessed be the man that turneth his face
towards thee, that perceiveth from thee the fragrance of God’s Presence, the
Lord of all worlds. His glory be on thee, and the brightness of His light
envelop thee, inasmuch as God hath made thee a paradise unto His servants, and
proclaimed thee to be the blest and sacred land of which He, Himself, hath made
mention in the Books which His Prophets and Messengers have revealed.

Intellect hath various degrees. As a discussion of the
pronouncements made by the philosophers in this connection would pass beyond
the scope of our discourse, we have refrained from mentioning them. It is
nonetheless indisputably clear and evident that the minds of men have never
been, nor shall they ever be, of equal capacity. The Perfect Intellect alone
can provide true guidance and direction. Thus were these sublime words revealed
by the Pen of the Most High, exalted be His glory, in response to this
question: “The Tongue of Wisdom proclaimeth: He that hath Me not is bereft of
all things. Turn ye away from all that is on earth and seek none else but Me. I
am the Sun of Wisdom and the Ocean of Knowledge. I cheer the faint and revive
the dead. I am the guiding Light that illumineth the way. I am the royal Falcon
on the arm of the Almighty. I unfold the drooping wings of every broken bird

Say: The measure of
all created things hath been appointed in this concealed and manifest Temple,
wherein lie enshrined the knowledge of the heavens and the earth, and of all
things past and future. The finger of
God’s handiwork hath inscribed upon this Tablet that which the wisest and most
learned of men are powerless to fathom, and hath created therein temples
inscrutable to all save His own Self, could ye but apprehend this truth. Blessed be the one who readeth it, who
pondereth its contents, and who is numbered with them that comprehend! (Baha'u'llah,

It is Our wish to remember the Abode of supreme blissfulness
(Tihrán), the holy and shining city—the city wherein the fragrance of the
Well-Beloved hath been shed, wherein His signs have been diffused, wherein the
evidences of His glory have been revealed, wherein His standards have been
raised, wherein His tabernacle hath been pitched, wherein each of His wise
decrees hath been unfolded.
It is the city in which the sweet savors of reunion have
breathed, which have caused the sincere lovers of God to draw nigh unto Him,
and to gain access to the Habitation of holiness and beauty. Happy is the
wayfarer that directeth his steps towards this city, that gaineth admittance
into it, and quaffeth the wine of reunion, through the outpouring grace of his

O people of Bahá! Trustworthiness is in truth the best of
vestures for your temples and the most glorious crown for your heads. Take ye

O thou whose face is turned towards Me! As soon as thine
eyes behold from afar My native city (Tihrán), stand thou and say: I am come to
thee out of the Prison, O Land of Tá, with tidings from God, the Help in Peril,
the Self-Subsisting. I announce unto thee, O mother of the world and fountain
of light unto all its peoples, the tender mercies of thy Lord, and greet thee
in the name of Him Who is the Eternal Truth, the Knower of things unseen. I
testify that within thee He Who is the Hidden Name was revealed, and the Unseen
Treasure uncovered. Through thee the secret of all things, be they of the past
or of the future, hath been unfolded.
O Land of Tá! He Who is the Lord of Names remembereth thee
in His glorious station. Thou wert the Day Spring of the Cause of God, the
fountain of His Revelation, the manifestation of His
Most Great Name—a Name that hath caused the hearts and souls of men to tremble.
How vast the number of those men and women, those victims of tyranny, that
have, within thy walls, laid down their lives in the path of God, and been
buried beneath thy dust with such cruelty as to cause every honored servant of

Only when the lamp of search, of earnest striving, of
longing desire, of passionate devotion, of fervid love, of rapture, and ecstasy,
is kindled within the seeker's heart, and the breeze of His loving-kindness is
wafted upon his soul, will the darkness of error be dispelled, the mists of
doubts and misgivings be dissipated, and the lights of knowledge and certitude
envelop his being. At that hour will the mystic Herald, bearing the joyful
tidings of the Spirit, shine forth from the City of God resplendent as the
morn, and, through the trumpet-blast of knowledge, will awaken the heart, the
soul, and the spirit from the slumber of negligence. Then will the manifold
favours and outpouring grace of the holy and everlasting Spirit confer such new
life upon the seeker that he will find himself endowed with a new eye, a new
ear, a new heart, and a new mind. He will contemplate the manifest signs of the
universe, and will penetrate the hidden mysteries of the soul. Gazing with the
eye of God, he will perceive within every atom a door that leadeth him to the
stations of absolute certitude. He will discover in all things the mysteries of
divine Revelation and the evidences of an everlasting manifestation. (Baha'u'llah,

… certain invalid souls have confined the lands of knowledge
within the wall of self and passion, and clouded them with ignorance and
blindness, and have been veiled from the light of the mystic sun and the
mysteries of the Eternal Beloved; they have strayed afar from the jewelled
wisdom of the lucid Faith of the Lord of Messengers, have been shut out of the
sanctuary of the All-Beauteous One, and banished from the Ka’bih[1] of

A race of men incomparable in character, shall be raised up

indeed is naught but a grievous error. He, verily, hath again come down from

O My Brother! Until thou enter the Egypt of love, thou shalt
never come to the Joseph of the Beauty of the Friend; and until, like Jacob,
thou forsake thine outward eyes, thou shalt never open the eye of thine inward
being; and until thou burn with the fire of love, thou shalt never commune with
the Lover of Longing. (Baha’u’llah, ‘The Seven Valleys’)

Thou hast written that one of the friends hath composed a
treatise. This was mentioned in the Holy Presence, and this is what was
revealed in response: Great care should be exercised that whatever is written
in these days doth not cause dissension, and invite the objection of the
people. Whatever the friends of the one true God say in these days is listened
to by the people of the world. It hath been revealed in the Lawh-i-Hikmat:
"The unbelievers have inclined their ears towards us in order to hear that
which might enable them to cavil against God, the Help in Peril, the
Self-Subsisting." Whatever is written should not transgress the bounds of
tact and wisdom, and in the words used there should lie hid the property of
milk, so that the children of the world may be nurtured therewith, and attain
maturity. We have said in the past that one word hath the influence of spring
and causeth hearts to become fresh and verdant, while another is like unto
blight which causeth the blossoms and flowers to wither. God grant that authors
among the friends will write in such a way as would be acceptable to
fair-minded souls, and not lead to cavilling by the people. (Baha’u’llah,

Whatsoever runneth counter to the Teachings in this day is
rejected, for the Sun of Truth is shining resplendent above the horizon of
knowledge. Happy are they who, with the waters of divine utterance, have
cleansed their hearts from all allusions, whisperings and suggestions, and who
have fixed their gaze upon the Dayspring of Glory. This, indeed, is the most
gracious favour and the purest bounty. Whosoever hath attained thereunto hath
attained unto all good, for otherwise the knowledge of aught else but God hath

Were you to ponder, but for a while, these utterances in
your heart, you would surely find the portals of understanding unlocked before
your face, and would behold all knowledge and the mysteries thereof unveiled
before your eyes. Such things [1] take place only that the souls of men may
develop and be delivered from the prison-cage of self and desire. Otherwise,
that ideal King hath, throughout eternity, been in His Essence independent of
the comprehension of all beings, and will continue, for ever, in His own Being
to be exalted above the adoration of every soul. A single breeze of His
affluence doth suffice to adorn all mankind with the robe of wealth; and one
drop out of the ocean of His bountiful grace is enough to confer upon all
beings the glory of everlasting life. But inasmuch as the divine Purpose hath
decreed that the true should be known from the false, and the sun from the
shadow, He hath, therefore, in every season sent down upon mankind the showers

Beware lest ye shed the blood of anyone. Unsheathe the sword of your tongue from the
scabbard of utterance, for therewith ye can conquer the citadels of men’s
hearts. We have abolished the law to
wage holy war against each other. God’s
mercy, hath, verily, encompassed all created things, if ye do but
understand. Aid ye your Lord, the God of
Mercy, with the sword of understanding. Keener indeed is it, and more finely tempered, than the sword of
utterance, were ye but to reflect upon the words of your Lord. Thus have the hosts of Divine Revelation been
sent down by God, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting, and thus have the armies
of divine inspiration been made manifest from the Source of command, as bidden

When the Unseen, the Eternal, the Divine Essence, caused the
Day Star of Muhammad to rise above the horizon of knowledge, among the cavils
which the Jewish divines raised against Him was that after Moses no Prophet
should be sent of God. Yea, mention hath been made in the Scriptures of a Soul
Who must needs be made manifest and Who will advance the Faith, and promote the
interests of the people of Moses, so that the Law of the Mosaic Dispensation
may encompass the whole earth. Thus hath the King of eternal glory referred in
His Book to the words uttered by those wanderers in the vale of remoteness and
error: “‘The hand of God,’ say the Jews, ‘is chained up.’ Chained up be their
own hands; And for that which they have said, they were accursed. Nay,
outstretched are both His hands!” “The hand of God is above their hands.”

Be fair, ye peoples of the world; is it meet and seemly for
you to question the authority of one Whose presence ‘He Who conversed with God’
(Moses) hath longed to attain, the beauty of Whose countenance ‘God’s
Well-beloved’ (Muhammad) had yearned to behold, through the potency of Whose
love the ‘Spirit of God’ (Jesus) ascended to heaven, for Whose sake the ‘Primal Point’ (the Báb) offered up His life?

Seize your chance, inasmuch as a fleeting moment in this Day
excelleth centuries of a bygone age... Neither sun nor moon hath witnessed a

God’s appointed Day. This Day, however, is unique and is to be distinguished
from those that have preceded it. The designation ‘Seal of the Prophets’ fully

Doth it seem strange to the people that We should have
revealed the Book to a man from among themselves in order to purge them and
give them the good tidings that they shall be rewarded with a sure stance in

When the verses of this Book are recited to the infidels
they say: ‘Give us a book like the Qur’án and make changes in the verses.’ Say:
‘God hath not given Me that I should change them at My pleasure.’ I follow only
what is revealed unto Me. Verily, I shall fear My Lord on the Day of
Separation, whose advent He hath, in very truth, irrevocably ordained. [cf.

He, for Whose sake the world was called into being, hath
been imprisoned in the most desolate of cities (Akká), by reason of that which
the hands of the wayward have wrought. From the horizon of His prison-city He
summoneth mankind unto the Dayspring of God, the Exalted, the Great. Exultest
thou over the treasures thou dost possess, knowing they shall perish? Rejoicest
thou in that thou rulest a span of earth, when the whole world, in the
estimation of the people of Bahá, is worth as much as the black in the eye of a
dead ant? Abandon it unto such as have set their affections upon it, and turn
thou unto Him Who is the Desire of the world. Whither are gone the proud and
their palaces? Gaze thou into their tombs, that thou mayest profit by this
example, inasmuch as We made it a lesson unto every beholder. Were the breezes
of Revelation to seize thee, thou wouldst flee the world, and turn unto the
Kingdom, and wouldst expend all thou possessest, that thou mayest draw nigh

The world is in travail, and its agitation waxeth day by
day. Its face is turned towards waywardness and unbelief. Such shall be its
plight, that to disclose it now would not be meet and seemly. Its perversity
will long continue. And when the appointed hour is come, there shall suddenly
appear that which shall cause the limbs of mankind to quake. Then and only then
will the Divine Standard be unfurled, and the Nightingale of Paradise warble

The world is encircled with calamities. Even if at times
some good may be evident, it is inevitable that a great calamity followeth --

Wert thou to address a letter to Him Whom God shall make
manifest, begging that it be delivered unto His presence, perchance He would

He is in truth the All-Bountiful, the Most Generous, He Whose grace is
infinite. Otherwise, no way shalt thou find open unto thee and no benefit shalt
thou gain from the deeds thou hast wrought, by reason of thy failure to respond
‘yea, here am I’. Verily We have reduced thee and thy works to naught, as
though thou hadst never come into existence nor ever been of them that do good
works, that this may serve as a lesson for those unto whom the Bayán is given,
that they may take good heed when the sacred Writings of Him Whom God shall
make manifest will reach them and perchance, by pondering upon them, may be

Hadst thou observed the contents of the Epistle We sent unto
thee, it would have been far more profitable to thee than worshipping thy Lord
from the beginning that hath no beginning until this day, and indeed more
meritorious than proving thyself wholly devoted in thine acts of worship. And
hadst thou attained the presence of thy Lord in this land, and been of them
that truly believe that the Face of God is beheld in the person of the Primal
Point, it would have been far more advantageous than prostrating thyself in
adoration from the beginning that hath no beginning until the present time.... (The

The cruelties inflicted by My oppressors have bowed Me down,
and turned My hair white. Shouldst thou present thyself before My throne, thou
wouldst fail to recognize the Ancient Beauty, for the freshness of His
countenance is altered and its brightness hath faded, by reason of the
oppression of the infidels. I swear by God! His heart, His soul, and His vitals

How veiled are ye, O My creatures ...who, without any right,
have consigned Him unto a mountain [Mákú], not one of whose inhabitants is
worthy of mention.... With Him, which is with Me, there is no one except him

My Presence, there is not at night even a lighted lamp! And yet, in places [of
worship] which in varying degrees reach out unto Him, unnumbered lamps are
shining! All that is on earth hath been created for Him, and all partake with
delight of His benefits, and yet they are so veiled from Him as to refuse Him

Beware lest ye be hindered by the veils of glory from
partaking of the crystal waters of this living Fountain. Seize ye the chalice
of salvation at this dawntide in the name of Him Who causeth the day to break,
and drink your fill in praise of Him Who is the All-Glorious, the Incomparable.

The people, during the absence of the Báb, re-enacted the
episode of the Calf by setting up a blaring figure which embodied animal
features in human form [Qur’án 7:146; 20:90] ...
Whenever the people ask Thee of the appointed Hour say:
Verily the knowledge of it is only with My Lord, [Qur’án 7:186] Who is the
Knower of the unseen. There is none other God but Him—He Who hath created you
from a single soul, [Qur’án 4:1] and I have no control over what profiteth Me
or harmeth Me, but as My Lord pleaseth. [Qur’án 10:50] Indeed God is
Self-Sufficient and He, My Lord, standeth supreme over all things. (The Báb,

We have made it lawful for you to listen to music and
singing. Take heed, however, lest listening thereto should cause you to
overstep the bounds of propriety and dignity. Let your joy be the joy born of
My Most Great Name, a Name that bringeth rapture to the heart, and filleth with
ecstasy the minds of all who have drawn nigh unto God. We, verily, have made
music as a ladder for your souls, a means whereby they may be lifted up unto
the realm on high; make it not, therefore, as wings to self and passion. Truly,

This is Thy servant who hath quaffed from the hands of Thy
grace the wine of Thy tender mercy, and tasted of the savor of Thy love in Thy
days. I beseech Thee … to supply him with the good things Thou dost possess,
and to raise him up to such heights that he will regard the world even as a
shadow that vanisheth swifter than the twinkling of an eye. Keep him safe also,
O my God, by the power of Thine immeasurable majesty, from all that Thou

Say: He it is Who is the Manifestation of Him Who is the
Unknowable, the Invisible of the Invisibles, could ye but perceive it. He it is

None of the many Prophets sent down, since Moses was made
manifest, as Messengers of the Word of God, such as David, Jesus, and others
among the more exalted Manifestations who have appeared during the intervening
period between the Revelations of Moses and Muhammad, ever altered the law of
the Qiblih. These Messengers of the Lord of creation have, one and all,
directed their peoples to turn unto the same direction. In the eyes of God, the
ideal King, all the places of the earth are one and the same, excepting that
place which, in the days of His Manifestations, He doth appoint for a
particular purpose. Even as He hath revealed: “The East and West are God’s:
therefore whichever way ye turn, there is the face of God.” [Qur’án 2:115]
Notwithstanding the truth of these facts, why should the Qiblih have been
changed, thus casting such dismay amongst the people, causing the companions of
the Prophet to waver, and throwing so great a confusion into their midst? Yea,
such things as throw consternation into the hearts of all men come to pass only
that each soul may be tested by the touchstone of God, that the true may be
known and distinguished from the false. Thus hath He revealed after the breach
amongst the people: “We did not appoint that which Thou wouldst have to be the
Qiblih, but that We might know him who followeth the Apostle from him who
turneth on his heels.” [Qur’án 2:143] “Affrighted asses fleeing from a lion.”

God hath imposed a fine on every adulterer and adulteress,
to be paid to the House of Justice: nine mithqáls of gold, to be doubled
if they should repeat the offence. Such is the penalty which He Who is the Lord
of Names hath assigned them in this world; and in the world to come He hath
ordained for them a humiliating torment. Should anyone be afflicted by a sin,
it behoveth him to repent thereof and return unto his Lord. He, verily,
granteth forgiveness unto whomsoever He willeth, and none may question that
which it pleaseth Him to ordain. He is, in truth, the Ever-Forgiving, the

We will now mention unto thee Trustworthiness and the
station thereof in the estimation of God, thy Lord, the Lord of the Mighty
Throne. One day of days We repaired unto Our Green Island. Upon Our arrival, We
beheld its streams flowing, and its trees luxuriant, and the sunlight playing
in their midst. Turning Our face to the right, We beheld what the pen is
powerless to describe; nor can it set forth that which the eye of the Lord of
Mankind witnessed in that most sanctified, that most sublime, that blest, and
most exalted Spot. Turning, then, to the left We gazed on one of the Beauties
of the Most Sublime Paradise, standing on a pillar of light, and calling aloud
saying: “O inmates of earth and heaven! Behold ye My beauty, and My radiance, and
My revelation, and My effulgence. By God, the True One! I am Trustworthiness
and the revelation thereof, and the beauty thereof. I will recompense whosoever
will cleave unto Me, and recognize My rank and station, and hold fast unto My
hem. I am the most great ornament of the people of Bahá, and the vesture of
glory unto all who are in the kingdom of creation. I am the supreme instrument
for the prosperity of the world, and the horizon of assurance unto all beings.”

Erelong shall God raise up, through Thee, those with hands
of indomitable strength and arms of invincible might, who will come forth from
behind the veils, will render the All-Merciful victorious amongst the peoples
of the world, and will raise so mighty a cry as to cause all hearts to tremble
with fear. Thus hath it been decreed in
a Written Tablet. Such shall be the
ascendancy which these souls will evince that consternation and dismay will

O concourse of the faithful! Incline your ears to My Voice,
proclaimed by this Remembrance of God. Verily God hath revealed unto Me that

straight Path of God, and that whoever professeth any religion other than this
upright Faith, will, when called to account on the Day of Judgement, discover
that as recorded in the Book no benefit hath he reaped out of God’s Religion...

Unto every father hath been enjoined the instruction of his
son and daughter in the art of reading and writing and in all that hath been

Whenever the faithful hear the verses of this Book being
recited, their eyes will overflow with tears and their hearts will be deeply
touched by Him Who is the Most Great Remembrance for the love they cherish for

the inmates of the all-highest Paradise wherein they will
abide for ever. Verily they will see naught therein save that which hath
proceeded from God, nothing that will lie beyond the compass of their
understanding. There they will meet the believers in Paradise, who will address

O SON OF MAN! Upon the tree of effulgent glory I have hung
for thee the choicest fruits, wherefore hast thou turned away and contented

He Who is the Dawning-place of God’s Cause hath no partner
in the Most Great Infallibility. He it is Who, in the kingdom of creation, is
the Manifestation of “He doeth whatsoever He willeth”. God hath reserved this
distinction unto His own Self, and ordained for none a share in so sublime and
transcendent a station. This is the Decree of God, concealed ere now within the
veil of impenetrable mystery. We have disclosed it in this Revelation, and have
thereby rent asunder the veils of such as have failed to recognize that which
the Book of God set forth and who were numbered with the heedless.

Lament not in your hours of trial, neither rejoice therein;
seek ye the Middle Way which is the remembrance of Me in your afflictions and

Say, O peoples of the world! Do ye dispute with Me about God
by virtue of the names which ye and your fathers have adopted for Him at the
promptings of the Evil One? [Qur’án 7:69; 12:40] God hath indeed sent down this
Book unto Me with truth that ye may be enabled to recognize the true names of
God, inasmuch as ye have strayed in error far from the Truth. Verily We have
taken a covenant from every created thing upon its coming into being concerning
the Remembrance of God, and there shall be none to avert the binding command of
God for the purification of mankind, as ordained in the Book which is written

O ye rich ones on earth! If ye encounter one who is poor,
treat him not disdainfully. Reflect upon that whereof ye were created. Every

O people of Bahá! Subdue the citadels of men’s hearts with
the swords of wisdom and of utterance. They that dispute, as prompted by their
desires, are indeed wrapped in a palpable veil. Say: The sword of wisdom is
hotter than summer heat, and sharper than blades of steel, if ye do but
understand. Draw it forth in My name and through the power of My might, and
conquer, then, with it the cities of the hearts of them that have secluded
themselves in the stronghold of their corrupt desires. Thus biddeth you the Pen
of the All-Glorious, whilst seated beneath the swords of the wayward. If ye
become aware of a sin committed by another, conceal it, that God may conceal
your own sin. He, verily, is the Concealer, the Lord of grace abounding. (Baha’u’llah,

Lauded be Thy name, O Lord my God! Darkness hath fallen upon
every land, and the forces of mischief have encompassed all the nations.
Through them, however, I perceive the splendors of Thy wisdom, and discern the
brightness of the light of Thy providence.
They that are shut out as by a veil from Thee have imagined that they have the power to put out Thy light, and to quench Thy fire, and to still the winds of Thy grace. Nay, and to this Thy might beareth me witness! Had not every tribulation been made the bearer of Thy wisdom, and every ordeal the vehicle of Thy providence, no one would have dared oppose us, though the powers of earth and heaven were to be leagued against us. When once the seeker hath ascended unto this station, he
will enter the City of Love and Rapture, whereupon the winds of love will blow
and the breezes of the spirit will waft. In this station the seeker is so
overcome by the ecstasies of yearning and the fragrances of longing that he
discerneth not his left from his right, nor doth he distinguish land from sea
or desert from mountain. At every moment he burneth with the fire of longing and
is consumed by the onslaught of separation in this world. He
speedeth through the Párán of love and traverseth the Horeb of rapture. Now he
laugheth, now he weepeth sore; now he reposeth in peace, now he trembleth in
fear. Nothing can alarm him, naught can thwart his purpose, and no law can
restrain him. He standeth ready to obey whatsoever His Lord should please to
decree as to his beginning and his end. With every breath he layeth down his
life and offereth up his soul. He bareth his breast to meet the darts of the
enemy and raiseth his head to greet the sword of destiny; nay rather, he
kisseth the hand of his would-be murderer and surrendereth his all. He yieldeth
up spirit, soul, and body in the path of his Lord, and yet he doeth so by the
leave of his Beloved and not of his own whim and desire. Thou findest him chill
in the fire and dry in the sea, abiding in every land and treading every path.
Whosoever toucheth him in this state will perceive the heat of his love. He
walketh the heights of detachment and traverseth the vale of renunciation. His
eyes are ever expectant to witness the wonders of God’s mercy and eager to
behold the splendours of His beauty. Blessed indeed are they that have attained
unto such a station, for this is the station of the ardent lovers and the

September 16
O Thou Whose face is the object of the adoration of all that
yearn after Thee, Whose presence is the hope of such as are wholly devoted to
Thy will, Whose nearness is the desire of all that have drawn nigh unto Thy
court, Whose countenance is the companion of those who have recognized Thy
truth, Whose name is the mover of the souls that long to behold Thy face, Whose
voice is the true life of Thy lovers, the words of Whose mouth are as the
waters of life unto all who are in heaven and on earth!
I beseech Thee, by the wrong Thou hast suffered and the ills
inflicted upon Thee by the hosts of wrongful doers, to send down upon me from
the clouds of Thy mercy that which will purify me of all that is not of Thee,
that I may be worthy to praise Thee and fit to love Thee. (Baha’u’llah,

September 15
In this journey [in the Garden of Search] the seeker
becometh witness to a myriad changes and transformations, confluences and
divergences. He beholdeth the wonders of Divinity in the mysteries of creation
and discovereth the paths of guidance and the ways of His Lord. Such is the
station reached by them that search after God, and such are the heights
attained by those who hasten unto Him. (Baha’u’llah, ‘Gems of Divine

September 14
O peoples of the earth! Verily His Remembrance is come to
you from God after an interval during which there were no Messengers, [cf.
Qur’án 5:22] that He may purge and purify you from uncleanliness in
anticipation of the Day of the One true God; therefore seek ye wholeheartedly
divine blessings from Him, inasmuch as We have, in truth, chosen Him to be the
Witness and the Source of wisdom unto all that dwell on earth... (The Báb,

September 13
And now, comprehend the meaning of this verse: “The whole
earth shall on the Resurrection Day be but His handful, and in His right hand
shall the heavens be folded together. Praise be to Him! and high be He uplifted
above the partners they join with him!” [Qur’án 39:67] And now, be fair in thy
judgment. Were this verse to have the meaning which men suppose it to have, of
what profit, one may ask, could it be to man? Moreover, it is evident and
manifest that no such hand as could be seen by human eye could accomplish such
deeds, or could possibly be ascribed to the exalted Essence of the one true
God. Nay, to acknowledge such a thing is naught but sheer blasphemy, an utter
perversion of the truth. And should it be supposed that by this verse are meant
the Manifestations of God, Who will be called upon, on the Day of Judgment, to
perform such deeds, this too seemeth far from the truth, and is surely of no
profit. On the contrary, by the term “earth” is meant the earth of
understanding and knowledge, and by “heavens” the heavens of divine Revelation.
Reflect thou, how, in one hand, He hath, by His mighty grasp, turned the earth
of knowledge and understanding, previously unfolded, into a mere handful, and,
on the other, spread out a new and highly exalted earth in the hearts of men,
thus causing the freshest and loveliest blossoms, and the mightiest and
loftiest trees to spring forth from the illumined bosom of man. (Baha’u’llah,
