“Recite ye the verses of God every morn and eventide.” (Bahá’u’lláh, ‘The Kitáb-i-Aqdas’)
October 31
This is the night [Birth of Baha’u’llah’] round which have
circled the Nights of Power, [ Cf. Qur’án, súrih 97] wherein the angels and the
Spirit have come down bearing cups filled at the streams of Paradise, the night
wherein Heaven itself was adorned with the ornament of God, the Almighty, the
All-Gracious, the Most Bountiful, wherein every created thing was brought to
life, and all the peoples of the earth were surrounded by His grace. All joy to
the concourse of the Spirit for this manifest and resplendent bounty!
October 30
O concourse of the seen and the unseen! Rejoice with
exceeding gladness in your hearts and souls, for the night hath come for the
harvesting of the ages and the gathering up of past cycles, the night wherein
all days and nights were called into being and the time preordained for this
Revelation was fulfilled at the behest of Him Who is the Lord of might and
power. All joy to the Concourse on high at the appearance of so glorious, so
wondrous a Spirit!
This is the night [Birth of Baha’u’llah] wherein the doors
of Paradise were flung open and the gates of Hell were shut fast, the night
wherein the paradise of the All-Merciful was unveiled in the midmost heart of
creation, the breezes of God were wafted from the retreats of forgiveness, and
the Last Hour ushered in through the power of truth, could ye but know it. All
joy to this night through which all days have been suffused with light, though
none can apprehend this save those that are endued with certitude and
discernment!
- Baha’u’llah (‘Tablet of the Birth, ‘Days of Remembrance’)
October 29
…dumbfounded, the Pen of the Most High cried out: “O Thou
Who art exalted above all names! I adjure Thee by Thy might that encompasseth
the heavens and the earth to exempt me from mentioning Thee, for I myself have
been called into being by virtue of Thy creative power. How, then, can I depict
that which all created things are powerless to describe? And yet, I swear by
Thy glory, were I to proclaim that wherewith Thou hast inspired me, the entire
creation would pass away from joy and ecstasy, how much more then would it be
overwhelmed before the billows of the ocean of Thine utterance in this most
luminous, most exalted and transcendent Spot! Absolve, O Lord, this faltering
Pen from magnifying so august a station, and deal mercifully with me, O my
Possessor and my King. Overlook then my trespasses in Thy presence. Thou,
verily, art the Lord of bounty, the All-Powerful, the Ever-Forgiving, the Most
Generous.”
- Baha’u’llah (‘Days of Remembrance’)
October 28
O night of the All-Bountiful! [Birth of the Báb] In thee do
We verily behold the Mother Book. Is it a Book, in truth, or rather a child
begotten? Nay, by Myself! Such words pertain to the realm of names, whilst God
hath sanctified this Book above all names. Through it the Hidden Secret and the
Treasured Mystery have been revealed. Nay, by My life! All that hath been
mentioned pertaineth to the realm of attributes, whereas the Mother Book
standeth supreme above this. Through it have appeared the manifestations of
“There is no God but God” over them all. Nay, while such things have been
proclaimed to all people, in the estimation of thy Lord naught but His ear is
capable of hearing them. Blessed are those that are well assured!
- Baha’u’llah (‘Days of Remembrance’)
October 27
On this night [Birth of the Báb] the fragrance of nearness
was wafted, the portals of reunion at the end of days were flung open, and all
created things were moved to exclaim: “The Kingdom is God’s, the Lord of all
names, Who is come with world-embracing sovereignty!” On this night the
Concourse on high celebrated the praise of their Lord, the Exalted, the Most
Glorious, and the realities of the divine names extolled Him Who is the King of
the beginning and the end in this Revelation, a Revelation through whose potency
the mountains have hastened unto Him Who is the All-Sufficing, the Most High,
and the hearts have turned towards the countenance of their Best-Beloved, and
the leaves have been stirred into motion by the breezes of yearning, and the
trees have raised their voices in joyful reply to the call of Him Who is the
Unconstrained, and the entire earth hath trembled with longing in its desire to
attain reunion with the Eternal King, and all things have been made new by that
concealed Word which hath appeared in this mighty Name.

October 26
“This is the Day whereon the Ocean of God’s mercy hath been
manifested unto men, the Day in which the Daystar of His loving-kindness hath
shed its radiance upon them, the Day in which the clouds of His bountiful favor
have overshadowed the whole of mankind.” “By the righteousness of Mine own
Self! Great, immeasurably great is this Cause! Mighty, inconceivably mighty is
this Day!” “Every Prophet hath announced the coming of this Day, and every
Messenger hath groaned in His yearning for this Revelation—a revelation which,
no sooner had it been revealed than all created things cried out saying, ‘The
earth is God’s, the Most Exalted, the Most Great!’”
- Baha’u’llah (Excerpts
quoted by Shoghi Effendi in ‘The Advent of Divine Justice’)
October 25
This is the month [Birth of Baha’u’llah’] wherein Paradise
itself was decked forth with the splendours of the countenance of its Lord, the
All-Merciful, and the heavenly Nightingale warbled its melody upon the Divine
Lote-Tree, and the hearts of the favoured ones were filled with rapture. But
alas, the people, for the most part, are heedless. Blessed be the one who hath
recognized Him and apprehended that which was promised in the Books of God, the
Almighty, the All-Praised; and woe betide him that hath turned aside from the
One upon Whom the Concourse on high have fixed their gaze, Him Who hath confounded
every wayward misbeliever.
- Baha’u’llah (‘Days of Remembrance’)
October 24
By God! This is the month [Birth of Baha’u’llah’] through
which all other months have been illumined, the month wherein He Who is the
Hidden Secret and the Well-guarded Treasure hath been made manifest and hath
called aloud amidst all humankind. All dominion belongeth to this newborn Child
through Whom the face of creation hath been wreathed in smiles, and the trees
have swayed, and the oceans have surged, and the mountains have taken flight,
and Paradise hath lifted its voice, and the Rock hath cried out, and all things
have exclaimed, “O concourse of creation! Hasten ye towards the dawning-place
of the countenance of your Lord, the Merciful, the Compassionate!”
- Baha’u’llah (‘Days of Remembrance’)
October 23
This is the month wherein was born He Who beareth the Most
Great Name, Whose appearance hath caused the limbs of humankind to quake and
the dust of Whose footsteps the Concourse on high and the dwellers of the
cities of names have sought for a blessing. Whereupon they rendered praise unto
God and cried out in joy and exultation.
- Baha’u’llah (‘Days of Remembrance’)
October 22
“How great is the Cause, how staggering the weight of its
Message!” “In this most mighty Revelation all the Dispensations of the past
have attained their highest, their final consummation.” “This is the Day in
which God’s most excellent favors have been poured out upon men, the Day in
which His most mighty grace hath been infused into all created things.”
- Baha’u’llah (Excerpts quoted by Shoghi Effendi in ‘The Advent of Divine
Justice’)
October 21
O concourse of divines! This is the day whereon nothing
amongst all things, nor any name amongst all names, can profit you save through
this Name which God hath made the Manifestation of His Cause and the Dayspring
of His Most Excellent Titles unto all who are in the kingdom of creation.
Blessed is that man that hath recognized the fragrance of the All-Merciful and
been numbered with the steadfast. Your sciences shall not profit you in this
day, nor your arts, nor your treasures, nor your glory. Cast them all behind
your backs, and set your faces towards the Most Sublime Word through which the
Scriptures and the Books and this lucid Tablet have been distinctly set forth.
Cast away, O concourse of divines, the things ye have composed with the pens of
your idle fancies and vain imaginings. By God! The Day-Star of Knowledge hath
shone forth above the horizon of certitude.
- Baha’u’llah (From the ‘Tablet of
the Proof’ [Kawh-i-Burhan] addressed to Shaykh Muhammad Báqir, denounced by
Bahá’u’lláh as the ‘Wolf’; Tablets of Baha’u’llah revealed after the
Kitab-i-Aqdas’)
October 20
October 19
Peruse thou the Kitáb-i-Íqán and that which the All-Merciful
hath sent down unto the King of Paris [Napoleon III] and to such as are like
him, that thou mayest be made aware of the things that have happened in the
past, and be persuaded that We have not sought to spread disorder in the land
after it had been well-ordered. We exhort, wholly for the sake of God, His
servants. Let him who wisheth turn unto Him, and him who wisheth turn aside.
Our Lord, the Merciful, is verily the All-Sufficing, the All-Praised.
- Baha’u’llah (From the ‘Tablet of the Proof’ [Kawh-i-Burhan] addressed to
Shaykh Muhammad Báqir, denounced by Bahá’u’lláh as the ‘Wolf’; Tablets of
Baha’u’llah revealed after the Kitab-i-Aqdas’)

October 17
But for the tribulations that have touched Me in the path of
God, life would have held no sweetness for Me, and Mine existence would have
profited Me nothing. For them who are
endued with discernment, and whose eyes are fixed upon the Sublime Vision, it
is no secret that I have been, most of the days of My life, even as a slave,
sitting under a sword hanging on a thread, knowing not whether it would fall
soon or late upon him. And yet,
notwithstanding all this We render thanks unto God, the Lord of the worlds, and
yield Him praise at all times and under all conditions. He, verily, standeth witness over all things.
- Baha'u'llah (Tablet to Nasiri’d-Din Shah, Suriy-i-Haykal [Tablet of Temple];
‘The Summons of the Lord of Hosts’)
October 16
And finally, I was cast by the transgressors into the
prison-city of Akká, and my kindred were made captives in Baghdád. The power of
Thy might beareth me witness, O my God! Every trouble that hath touched me in
Thy path hath added to my joy and increased my gladness. I swear by Thee, O
Thou Who art the King of Kings! None of the kings of the earth hath power to
hinder me from remembering Thee or from extolling Thy virtues. Were they to be
leagued—as they have been leagued—against me, and to brandish their sharpest
swords and most afflictive spears against me, I would not hesitate to magnify
Thy name before all them that are in Thy heaven and on Thy earth. Nay rather, I
would cry out and say: “This, O my Beloved, is my face which I have offered up
for Thy face, and this is my spirit which I have sacrificed for Thy spirit, and
this is my blood that seetheth in my veins, in its longing to be shed for love
of Thee and in Thy path.”
- Baha’u’llah (‘Prayers and Meditations by
Baha’u’llah’)
October 15
Though the fierce winds of the hatred of the wicked doers
blew and beat on this Lamp, [Baha’u’llah] He was, at no time, in His love for
Thy [God’s] beauty, hindered from shedding the fragrance of His light. As the
transgressions committed against Thee waxed greater and greater, my eagerness
to reveal Thy Cause correspondingly increased, and as the tribulations
deepened—and to this Thy glory beareth me witness— a fuller measure of Thy sovereignty
and of Thy power was vouchsafed by me unto Thy creatures.
- Baha’u’llah (‘Prayers and Meditations by Baha’u’llah’)
October 14
October 13
By My Lord! Were I
given the choice between, on the one hand, the wealth and opulence, the ease
and comfort, the honour and glory which they [certain divines] enjoy, and, on
the other, the adversities and trials which are Mine, I would unhesitatingly
choose My present condition and would refuse to barter a single atom of these
hardships for all that hath been created in the world of being.
- Baha'u'llah (Tablet to Nasiri’d-Din Shah, Suriy-i-Haykal [Tablet of Temple]; ‘The Summons of
the Lord of Hosts’)
October 12
We beseech God to purge the hearts of certain divines from
rancour and enmity, that they may look upon matters with an eye unbeclouded by
contempt. May He raise them up unto so
lofty a station that neither the attractions of the world, nor the allurements
of authority, may deflect them from gazing upon the Supreme Horizon, and that
neither worldly benefits nor carnal desires shall prevent them from attaining
that Day whereon the mountains shall be reduced to dust.
- Baha'u'llah (Tablet to Nasiri’d-Din Shah, Suriy-i-Haykal
[Tablet of Temple]; ‘The Summons of the Lord of Hosts’)
October 11
…He [the Báb] addresseth Dayyán, [1] who was wronged and
suffered martyrdom, saying: “Thou shalt recognize thy worth through the words
of Him Whom God shall make manifest.” He, likewise, hath pronounced him to be
the third Letter to believe in Him Whom God shall make manifest, through these
words: “O thou who art the third Letter to believe in Him Whom God shall make
manifest!” And likewise He saith: “Should God, however, be willing, He will
make thee known through the words of Him Whom God shall make manifest.” Dayyán,
who, according to the words of Him Who is the Point—may the souls of all else
but Him be sacrificed for His sake—is the repository of the trust of the one
true God—exalted be His glory—and the treasury of the pearls of His knowledge,
was made by them to suffer so cruel a martyrdom that the Concourse on high wept
and lamented. He it is whom He (the Báb) had taught the hidden and preserved
knowledge and entrusted him therewith, through His words: “O thou who art named
Dayyán! This is a hidden and preserved Knowledge. We have entrusted it unto
thee, and brought it to thee, as a mark of honor from God, inasmuch as the eye
of thine heart is pure. Thou wilt appreciate its value, and wilt cherish its
excellence. God, verily, hath deigned to bestow upon the Point of the Bayán a
hidden and preserved Knowledge, the like of which God hath not sent down prior
to this Revelation. More precious is it than any other knowledge in the
estimation of God—glorified be He! He, verily, hath made it His testimony, even
as He hath made the verses to be His testimony.” This oppressed one, who was
the repository of the knowledge of God, together with Mírzá ‘Alí-Akbar, one of
the relatives of the Primal Point—upon him be the glory of God and His
mercy—and Abu’l-Qásim-i-Káshí and several others suffered martyrdom through the
decree pronounced by Mírzá Yahyá.
- Baha’u’llah (‘Epistle to the Son of the Wolf’)
[1] Dayyan, Mirza Asadu'llah-i-Khuy: A Babi on whom the Bab
conferred the designation 'Dayyan' (lit. 'conqueror' or 'judge'). After the
martyrdom of the Bab, a number of His followers turned to Dayyan for guidance.
He claimed to be 'He Whom God shall make manifest' but after meeting
Baha’u’llah in Iraq he retracted the claim. Mirza Yahya instigated the murder
of Dayyan in Baghdad, 'whom he feared and envied'. Dayyan was the third to
recognize Baha'u'llah's true station before His Declaration. (Baha’i Biographical
Notes)
October 10
The purpose underlying all creation is the revelation of
this most sublime, this most holy Day, the Day known as the Day of God, in His
Books and Scriptures—the Day which all the Prophets, and the Chosen Ones, and
the holy ones, have wished to witness.
- Baha’u’llah (Quoted by Shoghi Effendi in ‘The Advent of Divine
Justice’)
October 9
October 8
By God! Troubles have failed to unnerve Me, and the
repudiation of the divines hath been powerless to weaken Me. I have spoken, and
still speak forth before the face of men: ‘The door of grace hath been unlocked
and He Who is the Dayspring of Justice is come with perspicuous signs and
evident testimonies, from God, the Lord of strength and of might!’ Present
thyself before Me that thou mayest hear the mysteries which were heard by the
Son of ‘Imrán [Moses] upon the Sinai of Wisdom. Thus commandeth thee He Who is
the Dawning-Place of the Revelation of thy Lord, the God of Mercy, from His
great Prison.
- Baha’u’llah (From the ‘Tablet of the Proof’ [Kawh-i-Burhan]
addressed to Shaykh Muhammad Báqir, denounced by Bahá’u’lláh as the ‘Wolf’;
Tablets of Baha’u’llah revealed after the Kitab-i-Aqdas’)
October 7
Know thou and be well assured that from the first day
whereon the voice of the Most Sublime Pen was raised betwixt earth and heaven
We offered up Our souls, and Our bodies, and Our sons, and Our possessions in
the path of God, the Exalted, the Great, and We glory therein amongst all
created things and the Concourse on high. Unto this testify the things which
have befallen Us in this straight Path. By God! Our hearts were consumed, and
Our bodies were crucified, and Our blood was spilt, while Our eyes were fixed
on the horizon of the loving-kindness of their Lord, the Witness, the
All-Seeing.
- Baha’u’llah (From the ‘Tablet of the Proof’ [Kawh-i-Burhan]
addressed to Shaykh Muhammad Báqir, denounced by Bahá’u’lláh as the ‘Wolf’;
Tablets of Baha’u’llah revealed after the Kitab-i-Aqdas’)
October 6
Know thou that he is truly learned who hath acknowledged My
Revelation, and drunk from the Ocean of My knowledge, and soared in the
atmosphere of My love, and cast away all else besides Me, and taken firm hold
on that which hath been sent down from the Kingdom of My wondrous utterance.
He, verily, is even as an eye unto mankind, and as the spirit of life unto the
body of all creation. Glorified be the All-Merciful Who hath enlightened him,
and caused him to arise and serve His great and mighty Cause. Verily, such a
man is blessed by the Concourse on high, and by them who dwell within the
Tabernacle of Grandeur, who have quaffed My sealed Wine in My Name, the
Omnipotent, the All-Powerful.
- Baha’u’llah (From the ‘Tablet of the Proof’ [Kawh-i-Burhan]
addressed to Shaykh Muhammad Báqir, denounced by Bahá’u’lláh as the ‘Wolf’;
Tablets of Baha’u’llah revealed after the Kitab-i-Aqdas’)
October 5
October 4
We beseech God that He may graciously vouchsafe His grace
unto all men, and enable them to attain the knowledge of Him and of themselves.
By My life! Whoso hath known Him shall soar in the immensity of His love, and
shall be detached from the world and all that is therein. Nothing on earth
shall deflect him from his course, how much less they who, prompted by their
vain imaginations, speak those things which God hath forbidden.
- Baha’u’llah (‘Gleanings from the Writings of Baha’u’llah’)
October 3
We have forbidden men to walk after the imaginations of
their hearts, that they may be enabled to recognize Him Who is the sovereign
Source and Object of all knowledge, and may acknowledge whatsoever He may be
pleased to reveal. Witness how they have entangled themselves with their idle
fancies and vain imaginations. By My life! They are themselves the victims of
what their own hearts have devised, and yet they perceive it not. Vain and
profitless is the talk of their lips, and yet they understand not.
- Baha’u’llah (‘Gleanings from the Writings of Baha’u’llah’)
October 2
Say: Observe equity in your judgment, ye men of
understanding heart! He that is unjust in his judgment is destitute of the
characteristics that distinguish man’s station. He Who is the Eternal Truth
knoweth well what the breasts of men conceal. His long forbearance hath
emboldened His creatures, for not until the appointed time is come will He rend
any veil asunder. His surpassing mercy hath restrained the fury of His wrath,
and caused most people to imagine that the one true God is unaware of the
things they have privily committed. By Him Who is the All-Knowing, the
All-Informed! The mirror of His knowledge reflecteth, with complete distinctness,
precision and fidelity, the doings of all men. Say: Praise be to Thee, O
Concealer of the sins of the weak and helpless! Magnified be Thy name, O Thou
that forgivest the heedless ones that trespass against Thee!
- Baha’u’llah (‘Gleanings from the Writings of Baha’u’llah’)
