O Shaykh! Verily I say, the seal of the Choice
Wine hath, in the name of Him Who is the Self-Subsisting, been broken; withhold
not thyself therefrom. This Wronged One speaketh wholly for the sake of God;
thou too shouldst, likewise, for the sake of God, meditate upon those things
that have been sent down and manifested, that haply thou mayest, on this
blessed Day, take thy portion of the liberal effusions of Him Who is truly the
All-Bountiful, and mayest not remain deprived thereof. This indeed would not be
hard for God. Dust-made Adam was raised up, through the Word of God, to the
heavenly throne, and a mere fisherman was made the repository of Divine wisdom,
and Abú-Dhar, the shepherd, became a prince of the nations! (Baha’u’llah,

June 8
We cherish the hope that through the loving-kindness of the
All-Wise, the All-Knowing, obscuring dust may be dispelled and the power of
perception enhanced, that the people may discover the purpose for which they
have been called into being. In this Day whatsoever serveth to reduce blindness
and to increase vision is worthy of consideration. This vision acteth as the
agent and guide for true knowledge. Indeed in the estimation of men of wisdom
keenness of understanding is due to keenness of vision. The people of Bahá must
under all circumstances observe that which is meet and seemly and exhort the

And if, confirmed by the Creator, the lover escapes from the
claws of the eagle of love, he will enter
The Valley of Knowledge

Set thine heart towards Him Who is the Kaaba of God, the
Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting, and raise thou thine hands with such firm
conviction as shall cause the hands of all created things to be lifted up
towards the heaven of the grace of God, the Lord of all worlds. Turn, then, thy
face towards Him in such wise that the faces of all beings will turn in the
direction of His shining and luminous Horizon, and say: “Thou seest me, O my
Lord, with my face turned towards the heaven of Thy bounty and the ocean of Thy
favor, withdrawn from all else beside Thee. I ask of Thee, by the splendors of
the Sun of Thy revelation on Sinai, and the effulgences of the Orb of Thy grace
which shineth from the horizon of Thy Name, the Ever-Forgiving, to grant me Thy
pardon and to have mercy upon me. Write down, then, for me with Thy pen of
glory that which will exalt me through Thy Name in the world of creation. Aid
me, O my Lord, to set myself towards Thee, and to hearken unto the voice of Thy
loved ones, whom the powers of the earth have failed to weaken, and the
dominion of the nations has been powerless to withhold from Thee, and who,
advancing towards Thee, have said: ‘God is our Lord, the Lord of all who are in
heaven and all who are on earth!’” (Baha’u’llah, ’Epistle to the Son of the

June 4
Ponder likewise the Dispensation of the Apostle of God which
lasted twelve hundred and seventy years[1] till the dawn of the manifestation
of the Bayán. He directed everyone to await the advent of the Promised Qá’im.
All deeds which in the Islamic Dispensation began with Muhammad should find
their consummation through the appearance of the Qá’im. God hath made Him
manifest invested with the proof wherewith the Apostle of God was invested, so
that none of the believers in the Qur’án might entertain doubts about the
validity of His Cause, for it is set down in the Qur’án that none but God is
capable of revealing verses. During the period of 1270 years no one among the
followers of the Qur’án ever witnessed a person appearing with conclusive
proofs. Now the Ever-Living Lord hath made manifest and invested with supreme
testimony this long-awaited Promised One from a place no one could imagine and
from a person whose knowledge was deemed of no account. His age is no more than
twenty-five years, yet His glory is such as none of the learned among the
people of Islám can rival; inasmuch as man’s glory lieth in his knowledge.
Behold the learned who are honoured by virtue of their ability to understand
the Holy Writings, and God hath exalted them to such a degree that in referring
to them He saith: ‘None knoweth the meaning thereof except God and them that
are well-grounded in knowledge.’ [Qur’án 3:5] How strange then that this
twenty-five-year-old untutored one should be singled out to reveal His verses

Those divines …who are truly adorned with the ornament of
knowledge and of a goodly character are, verily, as a head to the body of the
world, and as eyes to the nations. The guidance of men hath, at all times,
been, and is, dependent upon such blessed souls. We beseech God to graciously
aid them to do His will and pleasure. He, in truth, is the Lord of all men, the

Let my food, O my Lord, be Thy beauty, and my drink the
light of Thy presence, and my hope Thy pleasure, and my work Thy praise, and my
companion Thy remembrance, and my aid Thy sovereignty, and my dwelling-place
Thy habitation, and my home the seat which Thou hast exalted above the
limitations of them that are shut out as by a veil from Thee. (Baha’u’llah, ‘Prayers

By the One in Whose hand is My soul! We were dismayed by his[Yahya's, Baha’u’llah’s
half-brother] deceitfulness—nay, bewildered were all things visible and
invisible. Nor did he find respite from
what he harboured in his bosom until he had committed that which no pen dare
describe, and by which he disgraced the dignity of My station and profaned the
sanctity of God, the Almighty, the All-Glorious, the All-Praised. Were God to turn all the oceans of the earth
into ink and all created things into pens, they would not suffice Me to exhaust
the record of his wrongdoings. Thus do
We recount that which befell Us, that haply ye may be of them that understand. (Baha’u’llah,

May 31
Fear ye God and breathe not a word concerning His Most Great
Remembrance other than what hath been ordained by God, inasmuch as We have
established a separate covenant regarding Him with every Prophet and His
followers. Indeed, We have not sent any Messenger without this binding covenant
and We do not, of a truth, pass judgement upon anything except after the
covenant of Him Who is the Supreme Gate hath been established. Ere long the
veil shall be lifted from your eyes at the appointed time. Ye shall then behold
the sublime Remembrance of God, unclouded and vivid. (The Báb, an excerpt from

By the righteousness of the one true God! Were anyone to
wash the feet of all mankind, and were he to worship God in the forests,
valleys, and mountains, upon high hills and lofty peaks, to leave no rock or
tree, no clod of earth, but was a witness to his worship—yet, should the
fragrance of My good pleasure not be inhaled from him, his works would never be
acceptable unto God. Thus hath it been decreed by Him Who is the Lord of all.

So tremendous is the outpouring of Divine grace in this Dispensation that if mortal hands could be swift enough to record them, within the space of a single day and night, there would stream verses of such number as to be equivalent to the whole of the Persian Bayán. The door of the knowledge of the Ancient of Days being thus
closed in the face of all beings, He, the Source of infinite grace ... hath
caused those luminous Gems of Holiness to appear out of the realm of the
spirit, in the noble form of the human temple, and be made manifest unto all
men, that they may impart unto the world the mysteries of the unchangeable
Being and tell of the subtleties of His imperishable Essence... All the
Prophets of God, His well-favored, His holy and chosen Messengers are, without
exception, the bearers of His names and the embodiments
of His attributes... These Tabernacles of Holiness, these primal Mirrors which
reflect the Light of unfading glory, are but expressions of Him Who is the

When I contemplate, O my God, the relationship that bindeth
me to Thee I am moved to proclaim to all created things ‘verily I am God!’; and
when I consider my own self, lo, I find it coarser than clay! (Baha’u’llah,

O my brother! Take thou the step of the spirit, so that,
swift as the twinkling of an eye, thou mayest flash through the wilds of
remoteness and bereavement, attain the Ridván of everlasting reunion, and in
one breath commune with the heavenly Spirits. For with human feet thou canst
never hope to traverse these immeasurable distances, nor attain thy goal. Peace
be upon him whom the light of truth guideth unto all truth, and who, in the
name of God, standeth in the path of His Cause, upon the shore of true

O SON OF BEING! My love is My stronghold; he that entereth
therein is safe and secure, and he that turneth away shall surely stray and

Amongst the people is he who seateth himself amid the
sandals by the door whilst coveting in his heart the seat of honour. Say: What
manner of man art thou, O vain and heedless one, who wouldst appear as other
than thou art? And among the people is he who layeth claim to inner knowledge,
and still deeper knowledge concealed within this knowledge. Say: Thou speakest
false! By God! What thou dost possess is naught but husks which We have left to

O Qurratu’l-‘Ayn! Say: Verily I am the ‘Gate of God’ and I
give you to drink, by the leave of God, the sovereign Truth, of the
crystal-pure waters of His Revelation which are gushing out from the
incorruptible Fountain situate upon the Holy Mount. And those who earnestly
strive after the One True God, let them then strive to attain this Gate.

Thy vision is obscured by the belief that divine revelation
ended with the coming of Muhammad, and unto this We have borne witness in Our
first epistle. Indeed, He Who hath revealed verses unto Muhammad, the Apostle
of God, hath likewise revealed verses unto ‘Alí-Muhammad. For who else but God
can reveal to a man such clear and manifest verses as overpower all the
learned? Since thou hast acknowledged the revelation of Muhammad, the Apostle
of God, then there is no other way open before thee but to testify that
whatever is revealed by the Primal Point hath also proceeded from God, the Help
in Peril, the Self-Subsisting. Is it not true that the Qur’án hath been sent
down from God and that all men are powerless before its revelation? Likewise
these words have also been revealed by God, if thou dost but perceive. What is
there in the Bayán which keepeth thee back from recognizing these verses as
being sent forth by God, the Inaccessible, the Most Exalted, the All-Glorious?
The essence of these words is this: Were We to bring thee to a reckoning, thou wouldst prove thyself empty-handed; We in truth know all things. Hadst thou uttered ‘yea’ on hearing the Words of God, thou wouldst have been seen to have been worshipping God from the beginning that hath no beginning until the present day, never to have disobeyed Him, not even for the twinkling of an eye. Yet, neither the upright deeds thou hast wrought during all thy life, nor the exertions thou didst make to banish every thought from thy heart save that of the good-pleasure of God, none of these did in truth profit thee, not even to the extent of a grain of mustard seed, inasmuch as thou didst veil thyself from God and tarried behind at the time of His manifestation. (The Báb, from an address to a Muslim divine; ‘Selections from the Writings of the Báb)

Make not your deeds as snares wherewith to entrap the object
of your aspiration, and deprive not yourselves of this Ultimate Objective for
which have ever yearned all such as have drawn nigh unto God. Say: The very life
of all deeds is My good pleasure, and all things depend upon Mine acceptance.
Read ye the Tablets that ye may know what hath been purposed in the Books of
God, the All-Glorious, the Ever-Bounteous. He who attaineth to My love hath
title to a throne of gold, to sit thereon in honour over all the world; he who
is deprived thereof, though he sit upon the dust, that dust would seek refuge
